"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."
-Michelangelo
I've always thought this is a clever way of an artist describing his motivations for carving. I can just imagine this: an angel trapped in a block of marble, until an artist comes and carves to perfectly shave off all of the marble around the angel's figure until there is no more marble-- just an angel set free. The angel doesn't even have to mean an actual angel, it could be a carving of just about anything else. The angel could be a shoe, for all the artist cares. Applying this to our lives, we can think that the goal is stuck in a block of marble or something like that. We can't just touch the block and wait for the form to simply appear, perfectly carved, out of the big block of troubles and hardships. The block has to be carved away little by little, solving the problems and difficulties along the way. But once you get to the angel in the middle and set it free, the angel will always be there, leaving behind a new block of marble to begin carving so that you can carve out a new hope, dream, or goal of some sort.
